READ NOW: WATCHING YOUR DOCTRINE… [MATTHEW 16:5 – 20]
DEFINITION: Doctrine (from Latin: doctrina) is a codification of beliefs or a body of teachings or instructions, taught principles or positions, as the essence of teachings in a given branch of knowledge or belief system.
Sola scriptura: The Latin phrase sola scriptura expresses a fundamental truth. It means that the Bible—Scripture—is really the only authority for the Christian faith.
Therefore the Bible concluded that; “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine [teaching], for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
So Apostle Paul adds, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching [doctrine]. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2-3).
So, if the sermons you are listening to do not uphold the Bible Scriptures, and as a Christian, if you are not desiring [Matthew 6:33 a] to live the entire Word of the Gospel, you are living a lie, and the teaching is false! (False doctrine: teaching ideas that were different from what Jesus [The Scripture] teaches;- aka. “doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1): Where religious teachers will present themselves as bona fide representatives of Jesus [The Bible] , but what they say will not be from the Bible or is true!
A VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN: Psalm 91:1 defines a Victorious Believer. These are they that watch their doctrines, even in the most difficult time, chose Jesus (The Scripture) as a “Lamp unto their feet and a Light on their path…!” (Psalm 119:105)
WARNING: “Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine [Teachings] of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. (Matthew 16:5, 12)
WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?
(1). Pharisees:
The Pharisees were a prominent sect of Jews in Christ’s time. (a). they opposed Jesus and His teachings. (b). they plotted His death (Matt 12:14). (c). they were denounced by Him (Matt 23). Their characteristic teachings included: belief in oral as well as written Law; resurrection of the human body; belief in the existence of a spirit world; immortality of the soul; predestination; future rewards and punishments based upon works. Matt 9:11-14; 12:1-8; 16:1-12; 23; Luke 11:37-44; Acts 15:5; 23:6-8.
(2). Sadducees
The Sadducees were another prominent Jewish religious sect in the time of Christ. Their beliefs included: (a). acceptance only of the Law and rejection of oral tradition; (b). denial of bodily resurrection; immortality of the soul; existence of a spirit world (Mark 12:18; Luke 20:27; Acts 23:8). (c)They supported the Maccabeans [The Maccabees, also spelled Machabees, were the leaders of a Jewish rebel army that took control of Judea, which at the time had been a province of the Seleucid Empire. They founded the Hasmonean dynasty, which ruled from 164 BCE to 63 BCE.]. The Sadducees were a relatively small group, but (d). they generally held the high priesthood. (e). they denounced John the Baptist (Matt 3:7-8) and Jesus (Matt 16:6, 11, 12). (f). they actively opposed Christ (Matt 21:12ff; Mark 11:15ff; Luke 19:47) and the apostolic Church (Acts 5:17, 33).
