Daily Devotional | Words Of Life Or Death

Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Do you realize that each of us go through life with a remarkable power right under our nose? It is a power so great that it is capable of producing life or death depending on how it’s used. The bible tells us that our words are so powerful that they can bless or curse, encourage or discourage, hurt or heal, tear down or build up. Our words can even influence the way we act and feel as well as determine our attitude and outlook on life. That’s right, this powerful weapon is the tongue and it’s ammunition is the words we speak. The bible tells us in James 3:8-9: But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.  With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
When God created the heavens and the earth he spoke it into existence. He said let there be light and there was light. In his word he says we will do greater works. If that is so, and the word says The Power is in our tongue, then we should be able to speak to that mountain and it shall be moved, We should be able to speak to that bad situation in our lives and it shall be moved. That includes; health issues, financial hardship, depression, unemployment, any stronghold that keeps us in bondage. We need not speak of the problem, but speak what the word says about the situation by speaking the solution through the word.
When we feel down we should speak and say, I am more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus that strengthens me. When we feel unworthy we should say that I am the righteousness of God. When you feel as though you are under attack by your enemies; say, No weapon formed against me shall prosper, any tongue that rises against me in judgement I shall condemn.
We have to be very careful with our words especially to those that are close to us. For example, a husband and a wife can cause great pain through their words. Sometimes intentional sometimes not.  Negative words can have an adverse effect, leaving emotional scars that can last a lifetime.  On the contrary, words of encouragement and love can last a lifetime as well. In marriages, as the pressures of life intensify, sometimes the difference between going after a dream and remaining passive is having someone say, “I believe in you!” Remember, whatever you speak into existence, so it shall be.
Pleasant words, uplifting words, and a wholesome tongue can help to lift a person’s spirit, help make their hearts glad and happy, be able to turn away possible wrath and anger, and also help to guard and preserve your own personal life. One wrong word to the wrong person at the wrong time could lead you to having an early departure from this life.
Stop and think how good you felt when someone has released and spoken words of love, encouragement and edification to you. Words can cut right through you like a knife, and when those words are positive and constructive, they can have an incredible way of building up your own sense of self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence.
Parents–If all a child ever hears as they are growing up are stern and abusive words of condemnation, criticism and negativity, then that child’s self-esteem and self-worth can be severely affected. If a child does not hear words of love and encouragement from their parents, then sooner or later he/she will think they are not good enough and will never amount to anything worthwhile.
There are many grown adults who never end up accomplishing everything that God would’ve had in store for them, as a result of not being able to recover from all the negativity and pessimism that their parents heaped on them during their childhood. All of their possible growth in the Lord, in this lifetime ends up stunted as a result of the “death” that was brought upon them by the negative and abusive words spoken to them by their parents.
James tells us that the tongue is a flaming fire. The damage it can do could, if not cooled, last a lifetime. Satan will, at every opportunity, use the tongue to divide us and take our eyes off the prize, which is Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Scripture of the day: Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. ~ Proverbs 16:24 KJV
