Isaiah 55:2 NIV
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
The prophet Isaiah records for us a heartfelt plea from God to a people who were trying to satisfy their thirst without Him. He says essentially, “Why are you wasting your life trying to quench your spiritual thirst with things that will not truly satisfy you?” He pleas with them to come to Him, and to the water that will satisfy. Jesus said in John 7:37-38, ”In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
“Obey Your Thirst!” is the marketing slogan used by Coca-Cola to promote their popular beverage Sprite. They know everyone can relate to a feeling of thirst, and they are hoping to convince their audience that Sprite is the only way to satisfy their thirst. This is a great analogy!
Everyone is born with a deep inner spiritual thirst and need for God. The sad reality is many people try to quench their thirst for God with other things: — sex, drugs, parties, fashion, entertainment, money, alcohol and many other things that will never truly satisfy their thirst. Some people, in search of satisfaction, have gone from one unfulfilling relationship to the next and are left feeling unfulfilled and unloved. Many others end their lives after many failed attempts at satisfying their thirst.
I think we often feel world-weary at times, as we fight against the things that pull at us from every side. All around us messages promising pleasure fill our senses. We are told to buy this, taste that, watch this, and we will be happy. Only when we learn to no longer love the world or the things of the world, only when we understand that seeking pleasure in these worldly pursuits is merely a heavy cross — only then will we begin to understand where true pleasure lies.
Your greatest joy, my friends, is found in seeking after Jesus and enjoying what He gives. Anything else will disappoint.
In my moments of pride and arrogance, I rebelled against God only to learn that my way couldn’t lead to what is truly good. Then I came to the understanding that God has been good all along and what He says has always been true. So I can truly attest that Jesus is the only way.
I pray that you all will reach this realization today and discover that true satisfaction lies with the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
