Daily Devotional | Overcoming Temptation

1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

What Is Temptation?
Temptation is the twisting of the truth to induce self-destruction. The Bible said that the Tempter is the serpent, Satan, devil and the beast. He is subtle, smart, cunning and crafty. The bible says, “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” (Genesis 3:1 NKJV)

Everyday, we are barraged by constant, overwhelming news. Most of it either denies, or abrogate God’s supremacy in the name of freedom of choice, or religion. The truth is this; “The fool has said in his heart, There is  no God.” (Psalm 14:1 NKJV). This is to say that temptation is the attempt of the devil to turn men into fools. This, he achieves by making them believe lies about God! But, “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19)

Now, the question is “Whose account do you believe whenever you are going through a trial or temptation? This is my whole point! Having the Bible asserts that God is alive! To overcome, you have to read, study and believe the entire scriptures…no questions asked; that is to say, “you must have faith”.

Temptation is a trial in disguise. To different people, its faces are different. Some are being tempted by sickness, others by lack of needs being met. Still, in all cases, it is the test of human thinkality to See whose side you are on. Like Adam and Eve, deviating from the word of God induced their downfall. “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:15-17 NKJV). When God made that declaration, a restriction was made. Like every one of us, there is a word of God on us. It is always alive in us, and only you know it.

What is that word in you that reminds you that you have crossed your boundary with God’s instruction? Are you still conscious of that voice?

Very often, temptation comes with a fake promise. Remember that the tempter is a “Liar”, and as the intention is to make you disobey and alienate yourself from God, sin often comes with secrecy, cover-ups and separation. “So when the woman saw that the tree  was  good for food, that it  was  pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make  one  wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they  were  naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” (Genesis 3:6-8 NKJV)

Before I continue, I want to give a few examples of who your tempter is. In all cases, he is no good!

1. “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

This means that any relationship with the devil, his agents or plans leaves a person DEVOURED.

2. “The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.” (Job 1:7)

Watch out! The so-called best friend could be an instrument of the enemy. Of course, addicts, prostitutes and homosexuals, all have their stories, “a friend made them do it once”! So, checking every decision with the word of God before embarking on them is vital, revealing and safe.

3. “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44). Here, God is saying that anyone that ignores to do His commandment but follow the devil’s deceits is satan’s child. Because there is no good news coming from such fatherhood, the person stands to lose God and His blessings, unless he or she repents.

Today, if you are going through temptation, run closer to God. Believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This will empower you with the Holy Spirit; the power of God to reveal, reject and overcome Satan and his vices. Remember that “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Believing God and His word gives a saving faith. This calls for you to study and live what you study. Do not wait for the battle to start before you buy your weapons. Study to ” … be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction.” (2 Timothy 4:2).

Giving excuses is a vice of the devil to taking captives. The moment you identify your weakness, seek help. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)  Your help is with the Lord, and walking with Him releases you to the approved destiny.

Finally, remember what God calls you, and never accept or believe anything less than that! God bless you.

Scripture of the day: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9)
